It is home to a number of Olympic athletes and Olympians. SJSU students John Carlos and Tommy Smith made history with their black power salute at the 1968 Olympic games, which is now marked with a statue on campus. In addition to Brandi Chastain and the late Bill Walsh, other notable San Jose ties include figure skaters Kristi Yamaguchi and Polina Edmunds, and World Cup soccer player Brandi Chastain. Joey Chestnut and Matt Stonie represent the San Jose area in non-conventional sports.

In 1988, San Jose Earthquakes soccer franchise was sold. Afterward, Spartan Stadium became home to San Jose's Clash. In 1999, MLS renamed the Clash as the Earthquakes. San Jose moved to Houston in 2005 and started a new team from scratch, returning to the league in 2008 and now playing at Avaya Stadium. Additionally, Avaya Stadium has hosted the USA men's and women's national teams for qualifying games and friendly matches.

San Jose became the home of the Sharks in 1990. Northern California was ready for hockey to return to the bay area in 1976 after the California Golden Seals franchise left Oakland. A group of hockey advocates planned to bid for a San Jose NHL team at House of Pizza. With the Sharks dominating local culture, San Jose is now known as a growing hockey town. San Jose became a minor league affiliate of the Sharks in 2015.
