San Jose's Spooky 2020 Guide
In the midst of Halloween and Dia de los Muertos, you may have been wondering how to celebrate your love of all things spooky while being mindful of physical distancing protocols and the safety of yourself and others.
You did a great job of being a responsible visitor! No celebrations need to be canceled, just respectfully modified. Whether you live in San Jose or are celebrating from abroad, here are some ways you can get into the ghostly spirit!
Halloween Activities on the Row
Santana Row offers family-friendly Halloween entertainment every year. This year, thanks to safety protocols in place and the summer al fresco season in full swing, Santana Rows will host an Instagram takeover for kids on Tuesday, October 27! Families of all ages can enjoy an entertaining Halloween adventure with Kiddle Karoos, a musical Halloween treat kids will love!. Take part in the Santana Row Coloring Contest, which features a Halloween theme. This is their official spooky coloring page. Download it now. Share your work of art with #ColorTheRow to win a shopping gift card.
The Winchester Mystery House Halloween Flashlight Tour
It is terrifying to enter a haunted house alone in the dark. As a result of safety protocols, the only thing guiding you into this dark abyss is your flashlight and the voices warning you to get out if you can. In October, self-guided tours are offered. For the prime Halloween night-time slot, reservations are required, so book now!
Do you want more year-round ghost stories? You can unlock a variety of special privileges and incentives by becoming a member of the Skeleton Key Club. By joining the Mansion, you help keep the doors open for future generations!
Pixar's Coco rooftop screening in downtown
Cozy up with the family in your very own social bubble with a silver screen feature while overlooking the city views of Downtown San Jose! Local cinema junkies love 3 Below Theaters & Lounge and theyre creatively transformed their rooftop parking garage into an #alfresco dining experience. We offer Halloween packages for Pixar's Coco that accommodate dinner and social bubbles for two, three, or four at a time.
There is no guarantee that this pop-up event will last forever. The Up On The Roof: Dinner & Movies For (A) Change film series runs throughout October, so take the family for a series of films curated around social justice, racial awareness, and amplification of minority voices.
Dia de Los Muertos 2020
The Day of the Dead is a Mexican holiday celebrating the lives of ancestors and loved ones who have passed. We honor those who have gone before us and thank them for paving the path for us. As with many events in 2020, the long-standing event in Plaza de Cesar Chavez has been reborn as a two-hour streaming event partnered with several prominent arts organizations. This includes such as the San Jose Multicultural Artist Guild, the San Jose Museum of Art, the Childrens Discovery Museum, and Teatro Vision among many others. Experience the online opening ceremony, Aztec dance ceremony, altar building, face painting, sugar skull demonstrations, a virtual altar experience, storytelling, dancing, singing, theatrical performances, magic, an altar exhibit, a virtual photo booth, and a band.
Celebrating Altares Avenue through a drive-thru
There will be a drive-thru Day of the Dead event at the Mexican Heritage Plaza on Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31. During this event, families and community members will drive through a beautifully lit outdoor gallery of altars created by local artists. Calacas (skeletons) will roam the outdoor gallery while live music plays, and goodie bags (with candy and art kits) will be handed out. There will be goodie bags with gift certificates to East San Jose restaurants for some lucky folks as well!
Reading of The War of the Worlds live
This infamous radio play, based on the novel by H. G. Wells, terrified listeners who believed that Earth was being invaded by aliens.
In the comfort and safety of your own home, this live reading will be streamed via multiple cameras from Tabard Theatre. Two hours, including an intermission, are allocated for the performance. There will be a 30-minute video pre-show prior to the performance.
It's Halloween time at San Pedro Square Market! Celebrate Halloween with food and beverage specials, music, and more!

Creepy Crawlers at Happy Hollow
This zoo is taking their spookiness online to demystify some of their so-called creepy crawly creatures by showing you that these animals are actually quite fascinating!
Extend the Haunt
If you want to enjoy your night even more spooktacularly, choose a San Jose restaurant that does al fresco dining, takeout, or delivery in San Jose. Try out a variety of spots during Dine Downtown 20 through November 15 to extend your San Jose haunt beyond Halloween. The pop-up al fresco experience at craft cocktail bar 55 South has been transformed into a pirate ship.
You can also turn Halloween into a staycation and explore the new neighborhoods in San Jose with Hotel Valencia's Winchester Mystery House package! Visit San Jose hotels to find more offers.
